Healthy Kids Day Happened on April 18th, 2009

In its twelfth year, the bike helmet give-away has become a true harbinger of spring and was as eagerly looked forward to as the first appearances of the crocuses. In 2009, that date was April 18th at the Malden YMCA on Dartmouth Street.

We partnered with the Malden YMCA and the Malden Kiwanis, along with many other partners, not only to provide helmets and proper fittings to more than 700 children in Malden, but also to create an event that highlights healthy eating and active living.

Our partnership had bicycle spring tune-ups, bicycle safety training, and a bike rodeo. We also had a ‘Safe Kids Zone’ where parents were able to avail themselves with the latest tools in protecting their children, including finger-printing, dental impressions, and video documentation. Finally, we had many summer programs available for Q&A with parents to help parents choose a summer program to keep their child happy, healthy, and occupied throughout the summer. However, the bike helmet-giveaway was the centerpiece, as it always is, to this event. To date we have given away nearly 8,000 helmets to Malden children.
